BACKLESS? or STOOLS WITH BACKS ?
Backless Stools can be great for ease of use and storage. With limited space, they will often tuck away beneath the counter or bar and be out of the way except during use. They are not comfortable however, for regular daily and extended use.
Back support is the more comfortable feature when barstools are the main seating, used frequently and for long periods. For example, if this is where you have breakfast, linger over coffee, then read the paper. OR have dinner then watch TV. OR gather with friends or family.
If you’re preparing dinner while guests lounge and chat, you want the counter seating comfortable.
SWIVEL SEATING?
Swivel feature is essential for certain applications, not so for others. It is especially convenient for higher bar stools for reasons often overlooked.
Approaching a counter height stool, with feet on the floor, you can push a non-swivel into place before you sit into it. The same isn’t so with a higher seat. When you get up into the stool, your feet are up off the floor, so you cannot turn it into place. Ever see someone jumping and twisting atop a barstool to turn it? This is why!
30 INCH BAR HEIGHT stools are most functional with swivel mechanisms to maneuver into place. This is especially true with arms on a high stool. Often this doesn’t sink in until you’re actually experiencing it. Swivel mechanisms are generally sound. Buy from a reputable dealer who will back up the product. Ask about service in advance.
Cafe or Restaurant barstools should not swivel for safety and liability purposes. The hazards are small children, slipping on a spinning edge, and the one ‘one-too-many’ customer.
ARMS
Arms are a comfortable feature, especially for leisure use, at a bar for lounging with a drink and conversation. In this scenario, it isn’t imperative that the stool fit the bar necessarily.
When buying stools with arms it is necessary to also consider the arm height, because if too high, they will interfere with the bar or counter.
If the barstool is required to fit up close to a counter or bar, as for dining, the arms need to fit under the surface. Swivel is necessary also to accommodate turning in and out easily around the arms.
