BATHROOM LIGHTING IDEAS FOR READING
Okay, so the bathroom isn’t formally known as the reading room, but let’s face it. It is. That’s why you see magazine racks beside the toilet!
If you are building or remodeling, recessed flush mount lights are an excellent choice that may be planned in.
Remember for task areas, 2 lights 30” apart for each are ideal for most. Think of where the light is needed & place it there.
For the toilet area, (ahem) 2 lights over the front is the ideal – that’s where the book will be! – not too far back; your head will shadow the book – not too far forward either. Some people read in the tub. Plan a task duo there.
Don’t forget to light the shower stall.
BATHROOM LIGHTING IDEAS WITH TRACK LIGHT FIXTURES
Track lighting is a versatile alternative. Tracks fit nicely over existing electrical boxes.
If you need to apply lighting to a finished interior, track lights can work very well in small spaces to reach some necessary focal points, like the shower if it’s dark, or over the toilet. T or Y connectors and track extensions of varying lengths can be helpful to get light where you need to.
Track lighting is great for specific illumination and not suitable for general purposes.
PLAN BATHROOM SWITCHING SYSTEMS
Switch separately as much as possible, so you will get the light you need where necessary without over-using power supply. A dimmer switch is a very nice, appreciated touch for those long relaxing baths.
Small Bathrooms can be especially dingy. Short of getting behind existing wallboard, the easiest fix is to install track lights where the ceiling fixtures are. Otherwise plan in your task areas – vanity or sink, tub &/or shower, toilet spaces – and general lighting.
LARGE BATHROOMS ARE A WONDERFUL LUXURY
Consider for general lighting instead of the traditional ceiling fixtures, recessed pot lights in the room corners in addition to task areas. This is terrific general lighting for bedrooms also. How about an elegant chandelier in a large bathroom!

ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING
Structural features are beautifully accented with appropriately placed directional fixtures. Don’t miss this if you have interesting architectural details like a high ceiling, elegant millwork, marble surround, etc. A variety of bathroom light fixtures will work suitably well for this application.
You may need to engage a lighting designer for best effect. It is more than well worth the expertise to get just right.
Try wall washers and spots with track lighting or recessed pot lighting with specialty directional bulbs. Uplighting (& downlighting) with wall sconces is a dramatic possibility in the bathroom.
With a high ceiling in your own private ‘spa’, you may even add a chandelier! Imagine that, with a dimmer switch. …ahhh. Don’t get so excited that you forget your task lighting though. And be certain that it is a moisture sealed unit.
Remember Candles! If you like to unwind in your tub with a lavishly long soak, keep a stock of candles, matches and candle holders. Six or eight candles will light up your ‘spa’ very nicely. There’s something so soothing about candlelight.
Mirrors As a final note on bathroom decorating ideas, be creative with mirrors in the bathroom. There is always the functional mirror, but use a decorative gallery of mirrors, place them where you would pictures or art. Mirrors are reflective, maximizing light and space, a terrific way to increase each in limited spaces.
