LIGHTING THE BATHROOM VANITY

This obvious task station is most often fitted poorly with lighting considered 'normal'. Analyze this carefully. It can be addressed far more effectively. You want to see what you’re doing & you want to look great.

So what is wrong with the light over the mirror? …Or on the ceiling?

Try this. Go to a bathroom mirror with its usual overhead ceiling or high mounted vanity lights. What do you see? Shadowing on your face? Eyes dark & droopy with shadows below?

That’s the effect of fixtures too high, or overhead. Do you tilt your head back to get a better angle of direct light onto your face? Aha! That’s what is wrong with using overhead lighting for all purposes.

Bring the Light to Your Face

Now try this - light 2 candles. Standing in front of the mirror again, hold the candles at face level or a little higher, 2 to 3 feet apart. What do you see now?

You know this. It makes sense. Think of a photography studio. They light at lower levels to avoid shadowing & to light the face beautifully shining it's best.

Correct vanity lighting eliminates shadowing very simply. Mount 2 lights on the wall or hang ceiling pendant lights, average face level about 30 to 40 inches apart. If you are 5 ft tall & your partner is 6’2”, then place the lights at the point halfway between your eye levels.

Lower is better. These may be on either side of a mirror, or they may be mounted on a wall-to-wall mirror for a lovely effect.

Will the light be in our eyes? No. You will use a lower energy-saving wattage because the light will be directed to & reflect your face in the mirror. It will be going where it is supposed to go. A frosted cover over the bulb diffuses glare. This is a beautifully effective application.

Note: If you are mounting fixtures onto wall mirror, be careful to not tighten down too tightly to avoid breaking the mirror. Your glass shop can custom cut the mirror to fit the wall & holes for the fixtures. Everything will need to be carefully measured.
