SELECT COLOR EFFECTIVELY - DECORATE WITH CONFIDENCE
It bears repeating that while not necessary to repeat the same color in every room of the house, that the colors used should flow from room to room. That is, the colors should either be complimentary or harmonize.
Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel. Hence they contrast. When you have contrasting colors they create a ‘stopping’ effect. The contrast ‘stops’ the eye, stops the flow. So it only makes sense then that this should be avoided in small spaces where space is maximized by the design element, flow.
Harmonizing colors are those next to each other on the color wheel. Hues and shades of the same color can also be said to harmonize, as they blend together. Blending is the desired effect in small spaces, such as the bathroom to create a look of more space.
Now having so said, deeper colors can also be effectively used under the right conditions of effective light, space and room accents.
However, in the interest of keeping this simple, let’s focus on the best bathroom paint colors.
When choosing paint color for the bathroom, take note of all elements in, and affecting the room, harmonizing all into a cohesive whole. So you will see, there is more to color selection than simply selecting a color. It is necessary to coordinate everything in any room.
· Color of adjacent areas, rooms, hallways
· Color of the bathroom fixtures
· Floor color
· Tile & any wall surrounds
· Cabinet color
LOOK FOR THE STRONGEST COLOR
It is necessary to select bathroom paint color that will go with everything, tying it all together. Try to avoid going too white, but soft colors that have a white base with slightly deeper tone already present in some element in the room.
If the bathroom is fairly neutral with white fixtures, perhaps the flooring will indicate your color, refer to the color outside the bathroom. You may be very lucky and have a wide palette to choose from.
Whatever the strongest tone is in the room, pick up on a tint of it – and remember to harmonize it with all others. Don’t make the mistake of making a match with the flooring while overlooking the fixtures.
COLORED FIXTURES
This can actually be an easy fix. With so many color palettes being used now, even the oldest colors have possibilities. Some examples:
Brown or beige fixtures – everything old is new again! This can create a marvelous foundation for updating. Select a lighter tone for the walls, again being careful to harmonize all elements.
Avocado Green from the 70’s? Try terrific yellows to green tones to coordinate!
Even Turquoise from the 50’s is workable again with so much being done in those color hues. Choose a softer version and coordinate with similar or soft beiges and browns in your accessories.
So you see, if you can work with avocado green, there are many many options available!
