Certainly it has it's place, but the labour intensive process, especially of removal, makes it unfavorable in the modern lifestyle & home interior. Who has that kind of time? Whenever I feel I'm being seduced by it, I just have to jerk myself back to this reality: I have stripped wallpaper many times. Regardless of how nice it may look, I have a Deja Vu experience of many hours spent amid soggy strippings from not only walls, but ceilings! What was I thinking?! Commit to the removal task. Pull off a strip every time you walk by. Invite friends to take a rip at it when they visit. Believe me, they love doing it!
One friend looked shocked when she came out of my bathroom. "Why is that paper ripped off the wall?"
That’s the point. Before too long it’ll be so ugly, you’ll commit yourself to the task. I mean, then I thought, “..! Now I really have to do it.” But I finally had the ‘spa’ I wanted. The room snuggled me right in when I was finished with it.
Paint is transformative, fast & cheap; meditative & mesmerizing. Nothing transforms so quickly & awe-inspiringly as paint. Find a colour you think you like. Buy a small can of it. Paint the whole thing on a wall. Live with it a few days. Check it out it the various lights of day & night. FURNISHINGS …& anything that doesn’t work for you. Take down those heavy old dusty draperies! Give away all items you won't use. Take them to a thrift shop; some send fabrics for re-manufacture. You may even find a treasure there that will work for you!
EMPTINESS CREATES A VACUUM This is a very important decorating ideas concept. Remove what you absolutely don’t need or want. Home is a place where the things around you should reflect what is important to you & your desired mood for your Living Space. You will then need to decide how to rearrange & replace. Look around & if you can, start buying just single pieces. Don’t buy impulsively if you can’t afford to. Take your time. DO YOU LOVE IT? Ask yourself if you’ll still like the piece in 5 years, 10 years. Some classics ride every wave of style trends.
REARRANGE REDESIGN One client was so sick of her living room. When I looked at it, I found the furniture pieces were classic antique Deco, which lends itself to many decor styles. But the furniture was lined along the walls. No wonder it made her sick & tired! It had no life, no energy. There was plenty of space to pull the furniture away from the walls into a lovely grouping. Side chairs & accessories enhanced & created a backdrop for the furniture, giving the room depth of dimension. With art arranged asymmetrically, this severe uninviting room became a showcase as well as very comfortable. She was thrilled that not only did she not have to spend a lot – only my services & a few new accessories – but she had a beautiful, fully livable Living Space.
