The Tactile & Visual Dimensionality of the Elements of Design, TEXTURE & PATTERN Make Interior Living Spaces Warm & Inviting Enhancing Color Balance & Harmony

By contrast the lack of texture & pattern, or rather smooth, solid surfaces appear cold, receding & hard.

There is a place for each in the successful interior.

The Design Elements - Texture & Pattern relate very closely to Color. They have a tremendous effect on the appearance of color, as though to change it even. This is very evident in merely looking at the different effects of paint sheens on the same color.

Post Modern or Italian Modern interiors use smooth surfaces with little or no (smooth) texture, eliminating any fuss creating a clean streamlined minimalist appearance. Sleek smooth leathers & fabrics without pattern or texture are popular for upholstery. Metals & glass of tables, lamps, chairs & accessories contribute to the austerity of the look. This is suited to a particular taste & lifestyle.

We have seen this style come and go, especially since the 50's. It does not maintain a classic presence. While it suits some for a time, generally it suits a specific

psychological need only sustainable a short period of time.

The more basic need for living comfortable in the home interior is for the visual & tactile comfort of softer warming surfaces & pattern blended with & complementary, supporting hard strong surfaces.

A room with too many smooth surfaces will creates an uncomfortable feeling, especially when the furnishings &/or arrangement are not conducive to this look. It can be amazing what the addition of some texture & pattern can do.

Imagine if you will - and I've experienced many rooms like this in my work - a large living room with vaulted ceiling, high windows, no window treatment. Dark leather sofas flank a stone fireplace. There are no rugs on the dark wooden floor. This has a very uncomfortable feel.

But now when you consider the design elements, add color, create texture by putting down some rugs, throwing some cushions onto the seating, maybe put up drapery panels and ........viola! You have created depth & the comfort & warmth of invitation.

Hard smooth surfaces give definition & show off the architectural detailing which show the 'bones' or structure of a room. The balance & harmony come in with the mix of texture & pattern.

The understanding & practical application of all the design elements is necessary to the harmonious balance of art & design.
