The more basic need for living comfortable in the home interior is for the visual & tactile comfort of softer warming surfaces & pattern blended with & complementary, supporting hard strong surfaces.
A room with too many smooth surfaces will creates an uncomfortable feeling, especially when the furnishings &/or arrangement are not conducive to this look. It can be amazing what the addition of some texture & pattern can do. Imagine if you will - and I've experienced many rooms like this in my work - a large living room with vaulted ceiling, high windows, no window treatment. Dark leather sofas flank a stone fireplace. There are no rugs on the dark wooden floor. This has a very uncomfortable feel. But now when you consider the design elements, add color, create texture by putting down some rugs, throwing some cushions onto the seating, maybe put up drapery panels and ........viola! You have created depth & the comfort & warmth of invitation. Hard smooth surfaces give definition & show off the architectural detailing which show the 'bones' or structure of a room. The balance & harmony come in with the mix of texture & pattern. The understanding & practical application of all the design elements is necessary to the harmonious balance of art & design.
