Consider that except for the roughly-hewn task-oriented wooden stools used for milking cows and clerical duties, the ‘bar stool’ as we know it, has certainly evolved a very long distance! Our modern versions of Rustic & Classic Period Styles of French bar stools mirror chair designs of the time. The evolution of 'French Provincial' in decor trends began historically in the mix of status. Poor French country folk built the humblest of coarsely hewn furniture pieces. ‘Provencal’ relates to the country life of wealthy city aristocratic gentry vacationing in the ‘Provinces’. Their grand home styles became mingled with local farm styles over time. As their cast-offs made way into humbler homes and they commissioned local production for new pieces, a melding of styles formed what is distinctly French Rustic Country Style. The ‘gentry’ were often not pleased with the roughly attempted designs of country artisans. However, in emulating the fine lines and curves of the aristocratic Louis 14th French Chateau Style Furniture, they came up with the solid earthy country styles we are generally far more fond of! We associate the juxtaposed lines of fine furniture, hinting at the rougher country craftsmanship in warm woods carved with charming embellishments as classic French Rustic.
