Clearly Van Gogh's work increased in brilliance through this final stage of his life with the evidence in the most famous Irises and Starry Night series. Among this period his body of work escalated prolifically and in quality.

In December 1889, after Gaugin left Arles when the two artists had a violent falling out, Van Gogh suffered the first of a series of mental breakdowns. It is said that the residents of Arles petitioned to commit the troubled artist. Seizures continued with confinements following in Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers-sur-Oise, until 1890.

He continued to paint - the best painting of his life. He was very possibly near successful breakthrough with his work. Van Gogh's first painting sold in Brussels 1890 when he was invited to show with Les Vingt.

In 1890 his work was also shown at the Salon des Independants in Paris. Van Gogh shot himself on July 27, 1890, and died on July 29 in Auvers-sur-Oise France, with his brother at his side.

In a letter to his sister, Vincent Van Gogh wrote:

"It often seems to me that night is still more richly coloured than the day, having hues of the most intense violets, blues and greens. If only you pay attention to it you will see that certain stars are lemon-yellow, others pink or a green, blue and forget-me-not brilliance. And without my expatiating on this theme it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky"
