Design Elements and Principles Always Impact One Another
My Favorite Design Tool of All - LIGHT, I dare say, is THE most critical to successful interiors.
CLAUDE MONET knew light.
Understanding the needs for Indoor Lighting Design, starts with really seeing and getting to know the natural effects of light that nature has to teach us through its magical magnificent displays of lighting perfection indoors and out. We often go about life not noticing. It’s when we pay attention that we learn to creatively utilize the natural dynamics to energize design in living spaces.
These two paintings by Monet, and there are more, of the same garden pathway illustrate his studies with light.
Monet was a remarkable master of light. Through failing eyesight in his later years, he continued to pure brilliance. His painting studies in the effects of light on color, nature and seasonal changes, painting the same scenes over and over again in the seasonal lights of day perfectly illustrate this significant element.
HE NOTICED. How much more need be said of the importance of understanding the effects of Indoor Lighting Design on the successful home interior décor, than taking notice.
There is no argument. Lighting affects mood. It affects color. Its cast creates light and dark with a wash of reflection or a darkening diffusion and everything in between. Through this it creates depth of dimension. Lighting has the powerful ability to affect everything it casts itself upon.
Light application can be powerfully effective, dismally inadequate or glaringly inappropriate.
Lighting is the single most powerful element in Design and Art arrangements and applications. All of the design elements have very important and significant roles. However all are dependent on the effects of light to carry off the individual and corporate significance.
How much more do you enjoy a walk in the sun over one on a day when the clouds seem to be hovering right at your brow level? Nature is most enjoyable in just the right, continually changing, light of day for various reasons.
When you are connected to the effects of natural light through the day, you know the differences of intensity, angles and illumination. There is just something about morning light in an eastern window exposure. And who hasn’t noticed that special time of late afternoon when the long afternoon rays cast their rich magic in a spell over a room interior, shaded garden or covered veranda?
Color and form are each magnificent and powerful. Balance and harmony between design elements of line, form and scale in rooms are soul inspiring. However perfect the unification is applied, all is lacking without proper light to enhance depth, make color glow, and create the mystery and drama of shadow and bright.
Indoor Lighting Design is based on these very principles.
If you haven’t experienced a visit to a desert or ocean beach sand dunes, take my word for it, the time of day to go is when the evening sun casts long dramatic shadows. There is nothing more stunning to the senses than the contrast between light and shadow!
