ART IN INTERIORS ART IN INTERIORS series ELEMENTS OF INTERIOR DESIGN series EFFECTIVE LIGHTING series TIPS and IDEAS Whether the art being hung is two dimensional (paintings or prints) or three dimensional (sculptural), care should be observed to create a 'presence' that flows with the elements of the living or business space.
COLOR IN ART Art should not be 'matched' to a room as much as it should be 'coordinated'. Buy art you love. Chances are it will 'go' fine with the decor theme. All of my own art is purchased this way. If it doesn't fit where you originally thought to hang it, you will likely find a perfect spot.
SHAPES Traditional interior design art pieces have been of a fairly regular rectangular shape. To make more of a statement, try pieces with diverse orientation. Vertical orientation draws the eye upward alluding to extended height in a room. Horizontal orientation broadens a room with more 'sweep'. Squares of all sizes, especially a large square make a bold statement.
For home decorating pictures creating gallerias, use groupings of smaller framed artwork or family favorites. Work for balance in the design elements and relationship within the art grouping, with the articles adjacent and the scope of the room.
HOW HIGH TO HANG?? Now here's the million dollar question! Typically art has been hung way too high. Generally, it should be hung the same height as a mirror - centered to the height of an average face height. HOWEVER, there are interior design solutions that would beg for high hanging of an art piece. And likewise those decorating situations calling lower application. Once again we must come back as always to knowledge of the Elements of Design for proper guidance in balancing the look.
