The Kitchen Plan is probably the most complex & most needed of all Home Lighting Solutions for the simple reason of the need to address the task orientation requirements. A well designed Lighting Plan is pure delight & should be seriously considered.

In view of the cost involved in a kitchen, the cost of a lighting plan is highly warranted & recommended. Professional design creates lively sparkle. It shows off beautiful cabinetry & architectural detail. Tasks become far easier & enjoyable when you can see clearly what you're doing. All of this and ...everyone will enjoy the kitchen even more!

Again a lighting specialist is essential unless you are very adept at this. Be certain that the professional you engage is representing your best interests & not simply the best interests of the store she/he works for. A good Interior Designer will have the knowledge to plan your lighting &/or counterbalance the efforts of a lighting specialist.

If you’ve ever had to work in a kitchen with one overhead light & maybe… one light over the sink, you know the frustration of inadequate lighting.

Once you’ve experienced properly planned kitchen lighting, believe me, there is no going back. Plan for daytime with adequate windows & possibly skylighting to allow in plenty of light reducing the need for electrical use during the day. In fact with all task lighting addressed, there will likely be little or no need for the usual ceiling center ‘general’ lighting in the kitchen because of the close proximity of task light stations.

Recessed Lighting

I most highly recommend recessed application for all overhead kitchen lighting. It is streamlined, unobtrusive and effective, well suited to placement above work stations. Track lighting or other surface fixtures may be used if carefully planned & placed. A combination may be effectively used. IE: Drop pendant fixtures - or 2 - over a kitchen island or sink is a good combination with overall recessed lighting.

Task Stations

Consider all the task areas in your kitchen lighting design. The sink is an obvious starting point. The stove cook top, kitchen island, chopping block, pantry, & other work stations require specialized task lighting. In terms of lighting task areas, two overhead lights about 30” apart is most ideal & effective. A single light creates shadowing. Three lights causes cross-shadowing.

Cabinet & Counter Top Lighting

Awareness has been addressed to placing lights on the under side of the upper cabinets to light the counter surfaces. Lighting of the upper cabinets should not be overlooked. Lighting placed overhead & slightly in front of upper cabinets not only allows the better visual into upper cabinets, but also shows off the beautiful cabinetry that you paid a lot of money for.

Pantries & Storage Closets

Remember it can be difficult to find what you're looking for without light in these spaces. There are switches that can be installed to engage with the door opening.

Along with your Lighting Plan, consider including energy saving appliances, thermostats & bulbs. It is well worth the long term conservation and savings to consider energy saving technologies. Consider incorporating renewable energy solutions as a conscious choice of Solar Panels, Wind Towers And Batteries to experience "Living Off The Grid".
