EQUIPMENT AND FURNITURE PLACEMENT

Placement of equipment may be dictated by electrical and utility outlets. Furniture arrangement also then hinges on this factor.

WORK STATIONS – Consider the components directly necessary to functions at each workstation. Usually PC, phone, storage for files, stationery, and organizational cabinets and counters are required desk accessible stations. Printers, fax machines, and copiers may be centrally grouped with storage cabinetry for paper and miscellaneous supplies. Consider the flow of work efficiency.

DESK POSITION

Whenever possible the desk should face the doorway or at least into the room and not the wall. Working with your back to the room or to the doorway is an uncomfortable feeling. There is always the feeling of unease, whether conscious or not. Face it, most of us become startled when taken by surprise or someone approaching from behind.

If you spend long hours in your office chair, make sure it is one that fits you well. Spend some time selecting one that is ergonomically correct for you. The back should support your lumbar. A style that ‘wraps’ you is comfortable for sitting long stretches of time.

Important flow areas are considered on average at least three feet wide where there will be a lot of activity. Depending on frequency and use of office space, minor traffic ways may be two feet wide. Always ensure ease of passage between work stations.
