 The hardest thing about working from home may be in fact being too comfortable, dealing with distraction, and getting focused. Motivation can be at the heart of concern when working at home. I have worked from my home office for many years, as well as from a regular business office. It has always been easier to focus on work at the business office I ‘go out to’. There is a particular work intention about ‘going out to work’ in the morning. You ‘go’ through active steps that take you there. Then you work. At home, you might sleep in a little, take a nap, wander to the fridge… That’s all fine, but we all know that in the end the work must get done.
CREATE A SEPARATE SPACE At the home office there is more tendency to allow more distraction and reason to be led away from work. It helps to set up an official space to work in with the necessary fittings usual to running business. Organizing home office space set aside with specific work intent is the best beginning for work space focus.
With focal intention, the plus side is efficiency. With a place you’ve set up ‘to go’ to, you may find yourself doing that very thing first order of the day! It’s nice to be able to also ‘shut the door’ to work after the day, for the weekend – or vacation.
Whenever possible use a separate room for the home office. If this isn’t possible, at least find or create a space that can be home to most of what is needed all in one place. Have everything you need to actively engage all together. Do whatever you need to comfortably and naturally focus on your work. That’s the point of working at home. A divider of sorts, whether a piece of furniture or room divider can nicely give you the cozy cubby you need. Store unnecessary items like old files, etc. elsewhere.
BE COMFORTABLE – DO BUSINESS
Creating and organizing home office balance within the home gives you the control of space selections you are most comfortable working in. Color should be vibrant, yet settling.
